One of the best kept medical secrets of our time is that prevention works. Equally true is the axiom; "the more informed you are about health and diseases, the more likely you will demand and receive the best medicine has to offer". Our goal in setting up this web site is to accomplish two objectives: (1) help you prevent those illnesses that are more common in blacks and (2) provide a user-friendly medium that will serve as a source of trusted medical knowledge on diseases that are more common in the black community. Time and time again, we are reminded by statistics that blacks in the US fare worse than whites when they develop heart diseases, high blood pressure, strokes, diabetes, cancer and glaucoma (statements borne out of studies done in the US). It is our shared belief (i.e. Blackhealthonline) that, although there may be unknown factors that predispose the African-American community to higher risks for the above illnesses, a major contributing factor to the disproportionately high morbidity and mortality is the lack of persuasive information within the community that could help manage or delay the onset of these illnesses. BlackHealthOnline aims to provide this valuable information to both the consumers and the healthcare providers, to enable them take better care of those illnesses that have been identified to be either more common in the black community or appear to exert their greatest toll on African-Americans. Our vision is to serve as the source of trusted medical knowledge tailored to the black community. The former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop said it best when he stated: "Knowledge is the most valuable of all prescriptions." Our mission is to provide that knowledge. |
